And yet ANUTHA colossal, transformerish-prehistoric-abortion-gone-REALLY-bad clustercrapped multi-spewed f.A.I.L...

I can relate Mat! I'm a student studying graphic design and I just bought the same machine second-hand but this issue became clear once I started using it at home (now I know why they sold it!). I thought I was just unlucky but after googling this issue it is pretty widespread across most of their 5k models, some MBPs and even new iMac Pro machines according to these forums! I've read about people getting multiple replacements and the problem recurring. Reminds me of the fiasco I had with a 2011 MBP and multiple logic board replacements (separate issue but deja vu in terms of manufacturing flaws that take Apple forever to own up to).

I had planned to buy a brand new iMac once I graduated and could afford something better but reading about this problem has put me off completely! Over £3000 for a new machine with a screen that's a ticking timebomb...until this is acknowledged and fixed, I'll pass!

Noticed some threads speculating that it may be a combination of a software and hardware issue as many note it only started after upgrading their OS. Others noted that the issue disappears when using Windows with Boot Camp. I found that really interesting!

Just some notes/observations in the hope that it might help someone (not a fix but it might make your machine feel a bit more usable):

I switched to the light mode in Mojave as image persistence was much worse in dark mode, particularly the bar at the top. You could read the whole thing clear as day when the login-screen came up. The same thinking applied to Adobe apps like Photoshop - I switched to the light interface in the PS preferences. It's ugly but it does alleviate the retention a little on the screen edges with the toolbars.

I also set my desktop background to change every minute; ridiculous but it helps a little for when I have things open in windows on the desktop. Not so much with a full screen app. My screensaver comes on with 'flurry' after 2 minutes of inactivity.
